The Spanish Food and Safety Inspection Services have detected several mistakes in some of the websites that offer flights and holidays

The truth is t this is a bad news, but on one hand it can be help us concentrate our searches on the Internet while we are looking for flight and holidays and learn a bit more on things to be taken into account when looking for flights.

On September 27th, the Food and Safety Inspection Services, in collaboration with the official consumption services of the other European countries, did a search on the Internet in order to check if the final prices adjust to the ones offered on the websites and if the conditions are met. They also evaluated if the terms of contract comply with the European norms on consumers rights.

What are noteworthy in this report are the cases of deceptive advertisement and the failure to comply with the law when selling these services. One of the tricks of some of these websites is the offer of free air tickets without mentioning that they are subject to airport taxes; this refers to the sites of Vueling and Ryanair.

Some of the legal requirements theses websites fail to comply with, is clarity in the conditions or, for example, in the case of Ryanair, Transavia and Tuy-Fly, the information on the flights is offered in Spanish language but the schedule of general conditions which every traveler must accept is in English, something quite strange, considering that the sites are meant for Spanish consumers. They have also found out that in the advertisement these companies put on other websites or in the media, they offer trips at incredible low costs that are never found on their official websites.

All in all, the Instituto Nacional de Consumo (the Spanish Food and Safety Inspection Services) has failed seven websites out of the eleven most visited by Spanish travelers: eDreams, Ryanair, Iberia, Spanair, Transavia, Tuy-Fly and Vueling. The Institute is going to inform the Dirección General de la Aviación Civil ( the Spanish Civil Aviation Authority) which will have to take the necessary measures.

The good news is that four companies: Easyjet, Atrápalo.com, Rumbo and Air Berlin, came through the investigation unscathed.

On the other hand, the report also includes travel clubs that offer their services on the Net, where they have also detected deceitful advertisement. For example, the story of fabulous trips made by celebrities who have never been to the places they claim to have been to. It is also common to say that they belong to prestigious associations and institutions or to include the anagram of renowned organisations which did not grant them the right to do so.

For all these reasons, apart from getting thorough information on the trip (especially in the case of long distance and expensive trips), it is also important to visit some sites specialised in consumption to check if the process is legal. For example, the site of the Instituto Nacional de Consumo, the Spanish Food and Safety Inspection Services.

Gods and Goddesses of the Mayan civilisation

Like the majority of civilizations that have existed on out planet, the Mayans were polytheist. Their Gods derived directly from their relation with nature and the stars, which the Mayan used to observe in detail.

Although the type of beliefs was more or less constant during the Mayan history, we have observed that some researchers of the Mayan religion establish a period previous to the influence of the Toltec and a subsequent one.

But, generally speaking, it can be said that the most important god would be Hunab Kú (which means in Mayan language “only god”), a powerful god that governed the planet and was helped by several secondary deities. This is apparently a contradiction a unique god accompanied by a cohort of gods. Hunab Kú built the world three times. The first time it was inhabited by genies; the second time by an evil and dark race called dzolob; and the third and last one by the Mayan. There are proofs that they believed in other creator gods such as Tepeu and Gocumaz, surely related to the first one.

But the most well known name of this god is, undoubtedly and surely due to the archaeological discoveries, that of Kukulkán, which in Maya “plumed snake”. This caused to relate him to the Quetzalcoatl of the Aztecs. They started using this name under the strong influence of the Toltec. Apart from the name, it is believed that the faith in this god is previous to the Mayans and can be found in other cultures of Central America. The Mayans believed that his heart and his mind were in the center of the universe and that he was the creator of the universe and the human beings.

The names of other gods of this era were derived from the stars: the sun, Kin; the moon, Uh; Venus, Noh Ek; the star of the north Xaman Ek…; and other of less importance. Natural phenomenons also gave their names to new gods: Chaac, the god of the rain; Ik, the god of the wind; or Yum Kak, the god of fire. Human activities also had their own gods such as Yum Kax the god of agriculture; Ek Chuah, the god of war; Itzamná the god of wisdom; Ix Tab the goddess of suicide, which curiously refers to the sacrifices, since it was thought that those who committed suicide when directly to heaven; and Ah Puch the god of death. Maybe apart from Kukulkán there were other two important gods. Itzam Ná, the son of Hunab Kú, was the god of the sky, the night and the day and was represented by an elderly kind-hearted and toothless man. It was said that he invented the books and writing and is considered to be the first priest. Ix Chel or Ixchel was the wife of the previous one and was closely related to the moon and was venerated by women and on isla Mujeres there are remains of a temple where women went on pilgrimage to celebrate the passage from teenage to youth.

But, despite she was given positive attributes, she was represented by an angry old woman surrounded by symbols of destruction and death; what is more, she is considered as the goddess responsible of floods.

Flights to the Riviera Maya

There is a vast choice of flights to the Riviera Maya, as well as the prices. Needless to say that it also depends on the season, which is why this is the time for good offers and discounts on the ticket prices. And, although there are many packages which include hotels, we will take a look at the airfares. A round trip, of course.

For example, if we leave on the Friday 5th October to come back on the 12th in tourist class, we can choose between three flights of Iberia to Cancun, where the airport to the Riviera Maya is. Depending on the travel agency, there might be a difference of 30 euros more or less, including taxes and this is about 740 euros, almost the same as travelling with Air Europa, but this company only has one flight on this date.

It is a good idea to check if it a direct flight or not, although it doesn’t seem to be a direct flight for that day. And it is also important to check the duration of the flight since there big differences of up to 5 hours within the same company and between 15 to 20 hours. It is also common to change the company during the stopover. Iberia for example, almost always entrusts Aeroméxico the second part of the trip.

If we left on the 8th October to come back on the 15th, we can find a wide range of flights and prices. Curiously, the cheapest company is the Dutch KLM, which offers flights (two on this day) with a stopover in Amsterdam, of course. But there are also other companies: American Airlines, Aeroméxico, Cubana, Air Europa, Delta, Iberia, Continental Airlines, British Airways or Mexicana. Air Europa and Aeroméxico offer direct flights.

If, on the contrary, we want to leave on Tuesday 9th October and come back on the 16th October, we will be saving 50 euros on the airfare travelling with Aeroméxico in tourist class with a stopover.

When surfing the internet in search of air tickets there are tens of sites where we find flights: Rumbo, Easy Viajar, Destinia, eDreams, Muchoviaje, Viajar… it is always good to have references of the airlines we are flying. A good way is to visit the Internet forums where travellers share their experiences. One of the negative experiences most commented on of these forums is the change of the schedule of the planes, which normally happens after we have paid for the ticket and is always for worse: suddenly there is a technical problem that will make our flight last three hours more. But, the most successful are the packages that include the flight and the hotel. Paying for packages is almost the same as paying for the flight alone.

And, although there is a huge difference and we have spent a lot of time and money, reaching the Riviera Maya and discovering its marvels is quite compensation.

Puerto Aventuras, some miles from Playa del Carmen, was one of the first tourist centers of the Riviera Maya

Puerto Aventuras photo. Rivera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

At some 12 miles of Playa del Carmen we can find one of the first tourist centers of the Riviera Maya. Despite this, it did not experience a wild urban development and still keeps all the charm of a beautiful and calm hamlet: 240 hectares and 3 miles of marvellous beaches await the visitor. Being so near offers many possibilities of transportation: van, buses, rented car, taxi…, and even bicycle.

The type of most common building in the area: tourist resorts that offer all you need to enjoy a relaxing holiday in a heavenly spots. But, there are also a lot of activities to be done.

As I said before, the nearness allows you to do something for which Puerto Aventuras is renown on the Riviera Maya: its gastronomy. In spite of being a very small place, it enjoys some prestigious restaurants that offer a variety of food. Going for lunch and taking a stroll later on is something we can do on any of the days we spend in Playa del Carmen. But, we can also do other types of activities. Puerto Aventuras is the home of one of the main ports of the Riviera Maya, the Marina of San Carlos. Taking a stroll on the marina while admiring the any boats is quite a sight but, we can also find several water activities.

One of the main activities is sport fishing, due to the abundant and great variety of fish that can be found on the coast. You can also rent several types of boats with or without helmsman. We can also easily access the snorkel and diving centers. A type of more specialised diving very common in Puerto Aventuras is scuba diving, for which you need oxygen. Many scuba divers from all over the world come go there to dive at high sea and admire or investigate the marine fauna and flora.

Another activity related to nature is birding, not only in the surrounding jungles, but also on a small island located in the middle of the bay that shapes Puerto Aventuras.

Like in many other places in the Riviera Maya, there is a dolphinarium where we can swim among these friendly animals. And, if we want to have a swim, there are tens of signs along the highway that indicate where we can find the several cenotes that surround the city. In the majority of them, we will have to pay a small admission charge. A remarkable site is the cenote de Chacmool has numerous tunnels, caverns and caves; stalactite here is the world’s largest submarine with 12 meters in length.

Undoubtedly, one of the most original sites of Puerto Aventuras is its Museo de barcos hundidos (Shipwreck Museum) that displays that displays wreckage and artefacts collected from shipwrecks along the eastern coastline.

Archaeological excavations of El Meco, an antique and important port of the ancient Riviera Maya

At approximately 37 miles from Playa del Carmen there are the archaeological excavations of El Meco, which, even tough they are not open to the public, can be visited requesting a permit from the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History.)

Therefore, this is the perfect place for lovers of Mayan history and archaeology since there are no guided tours and we must go on our own. It is not difficult to get there, we only have to get to Cancun and from there travel some miles to Punta Sam. The transportation options are the usual ones: bus, van, taxi or rented car. And there is also an air taxi service between Playa del Carmen and Cancun.

If you wish to stay there for some days this is not a problem since there are many hotels in Cancun as well as in Puerto Juárez. Most adventurers can use the camping site.

El Meco is the current name of this region, since (as with many other towns) the Mayan name of this city is unknown. It is believed that the current name comes from an inhabitant who, during the XIX century, had a coconut ranch on the coast and the place was named referring to his limp.

Located in the continental zone of Isla Mujeres, it has the highest building of the archaeological excavations near Cancun. This building is known as The Castel, a quadrangular basis with four sections and a temple in the higher part. This building is surrounded by two smaller buildings that seem to have been a temple and an administrative building.

The central park of excavations has many other buildings. One of them has a long string of columns inside. The best preserved building of the lot is a little temple north of the park.

The road from Puerto Juárez to Punta Sam has divided the antique Mayan city in two and the zone near the coast is practically unexplored. There we can see the remains of a pre-Hispanic dock.

And precisely this dock is the one that gave importance to this city since it was a shipping area for the important religious and commercial activities of Isla Mujeres.

Recent studies have shown that in this area there was a primitive fisher’s town which apparently disappeared in the year 600 A.D. and that was uninhabited until 1000 or 1100, when a new city emerged, possibly for the service of Chichén Itzá, and one hundred years later it became the head bridge of Isla Mujeres.

Sian Ka’an, a “gift from Heaven” below the Riviera Maya and 50 miles from Playa del Carmen

If you are going to stay for some days in Playa del Carmen it is almost compulsory to pay a visit to one of the most impressive places in the world: the biosphere reserve of Sian Ka’an. It is situated 50 miles from Playa del Carmen but it will take almost two hours to get to an inner site where we will begin our journey.

The Mayans perfectly knew how to name this impressive place. Sian Ka’an means “gift from heaven” or “where heaven is born”. There are 75 miles of coast, 650,000 of jungles, rivers, and mangrove swamps. In 1985 this place was declared national park and only one year after UNESCO declared its biosphere reserve, world heritage.

Inside we can discover more than twenty zones of archaeological sites, some of the discoveries are 2,300 years. And, even tough there are three zones completely restricted to visitors, there is a lot to be seen.

It is an important nesting zone for water birds. More than 300 species of birds live here or pass through. Bird watching is one of the most requested activities by visitors. More than one hundred mammal species also inhabit this paradise.

The habitat here is also very different: beaches, where there are up to four species of endangered turtles; the second coral reef in size in the world with 68 miles; the coast dunes and the mangrove swamps, natural barriers against weather harshness and regions full of flora and fauna; a wide network of tunnels of fresh water joining hundreds of cenotes; small lakes of fresh and salty water with tens of islets and also the jungles.

Travelers who came here do not recommend coming on your own because this is a highly protected place (and it is good to be so) and the number of visitors is limited so we can be barred from entering after getting here.

The best option is to hire some guided visit. Some hotels and operators in Playa del Carmen offer a one-day trip. It is a good solution since it usually includes transportation, the guided tour on the motorboat in the jungles, food, drink and snorkel. This service is approximately 60 dollars (45 Euros).

They also have promotions to stay for more than one day, sleeping in well-equipped ecologic houses outside the reserve or in hotels placed in a nearby town as Punta Allen. The option to sleep inside consists in hammocks, tents or huts.

My recommendation in this case is to hire the service with eco-tourism operators, they know what to do to respect the place and that is why they are authorized by the reserve authorities. Here is a list of addresses of some local eco-tourism operators and organisations offering activities: EcoColors, Ecoturismo Yucatán, Amigos de Sian Ka’an, Centro Ecológico Sian Ka’an.

Sian Ka’an is not just a place to visit; it is a place for nature, flora and fauna lovers who are conscious of the importance of nature preservation.

El Rey, archaeological remains in the Cancun Tourism Center (Riviera Maya)

In Cancun tourism center we can find the archaeological site of El Rey, at the south of the ancient island. Today, the island of Cancun is still connected to the continent via two bridges. The excavations are opposite the Caesar’s Park Hotel.

Again we remind you that to get to Cancun there are buses departing every half an hour from the Quinta Avenida station, van, taxi, aerotaxi, or rented vehicles. The excavation has facilities, including guided tours, and the ticket costs 1 Euro/Dollar approximately.

Once again, the Mayan name of this city is unknown. Its current name, El Rey, is due to the discovery of the upper part of a sculpture representing a human face with the typical headdress of the highest Mayan authority; currently, this head is in the Archaeological Museum of Cancun.

Even tough there are not many remains left, researchers state the year 300 before Christ to date the first human settlements in the region, that surely were fishermen and salt vendors towns, but the settlements were few until the year 1200.

As from that date -period called late post-classic by historians- the town began to have human and urban importance. The architectural style is known as “oriental coast”, to which other known sites like Tulum also belong.

This Mayan ruins we can now visit are surely the center of a city mainly devoted to economic activities related to the sea. Let’s not forget that it is placed in a privileged region for navigation in the Caribbean Sea or the small lake of Nichupté.

Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, the whole maritime system collapsed and the inhabitants of El Rey abandoned the city to take refuge in the inner part of the peninsula of Yucatán. But, it wasn’t only this city but the whole area that was inhabited and exposed to the pirates’ plundering for three centuries.

It is currently the most important island site of Cancun. In the explored and open discoveries, researchers believe that this would be the most significant city of the region where the most important people had lived.

The main building, having the typical pyramid-shape structure of the Mayan, is a temple presenting patterns of different architectural periods, which would denote an intense urban activity in the city from the XIV to the XVI. Precisely in this building a burial was found with the typical adornments of a high-class individual of the Mayan scenario; these remains can be visited at the Archaeological Museum of Cancun.

The scenario is completed with many palaces and administrative buildings, joined by a road creating a north-south axis. In one of these buildings, the glyphic Ahua was discovered; according to the Mayan language, it belonged to the highest class and that is why it is believed that this building could have been the dwelling apartment of a king.

Fire is Born (Nace el Fuego): The mysterious invader who brought the Mayan Empire much of its splendor

According to the inscriptions on the monuments, which are still legible today, at the Riviera Maya, on January 8, 378 A.D., in the city of Waka (currently, El Perú, Guatemala), the local population was completely perplexed by a powerful army. This was not only because of their sheer number and strength, but also because of the strange feathers that they displayed, their powerful weapons (primarily the spear), as well as their shiny shields of armor that displayed the emblems of a king from a land far away. At the front of the massive army, a brave emissary who was destined to forge what would become the moment of the greatest zenith of the Mayan Empire.

The inscriptions depicted the events with great detail. Subsequent to that year, the person’s name began to appear everywhere. They called him, Nace el Fuego, (Fire is Born). He is thought to be an emissary who was sent by Buho Lanzadardos, the king of some of the city states of the Mayans, which were situated in what is known today as the high plateau of Mexico, possibly Teotihuacan.

Still, Nace el Fuego did not confine himself just to the city state of Waka. A week earlier he seized the city of Tikal (located in current day Guatemala). Here, after a ferocious battle, the king of that city, King Zarpa de Jaguar, was imprisoned and then assassinated. Many monuments were destroyed and in their place, new monuments were constructed depicting the victory over the city.

Despite his militant and diplomatic powers, Nace el Fuego was not much more than an emissary. He handed down the thrown of the influential city of Tikal to the son of Buho Lanzadores. From that moment on, he dedicated himself to set out to influence the entire Mayan empire, spreading the preeminence of Tikal throughout the rest of the cities in the state. Archeological fountains depict his image more often than any Mayan King of that epoch. This is what evidences the importance of this prominent figure who reigned during the years of splendor when the Mayan empire emerged.

The version of the story that we follow presents Nace el Fuego as a foreigner, but researchers have found another version. They say that he was not a foreigner to the city of Tikal when he conquered and left his influence upon it. In reality, he belonged to an uncrowned faction of the powers of Zarpa de Jaguar’s father. After turmoil in the state, he fled west and gathered reinforcements in order to be able to return triumphant years later, which he did in fact accomplish.

Other examples of his triumphant emergence were found in the archeological remains of a city called Uaxactún (also in current day Guatemala), which is located only 20 Kilometers from Tikal. Here, a mural represents a nobleman paying homage to a soldier who is seen carrying the emblems that Nace de Fuego also utilized. A few meters over, in a tomb marked with a pillar with similar motives to the mural, the remains of two women, one of whom was pregnant, one child, and one infant were found. Researchers concluded that they were the authentic, original members of the family of this city.

In references found involving Nace el Fuego in the last several years, he is presented as “Señor del Oeste”, (Man of the West). All of the conquests that were executed since Tikal, including the cities of the Riviera Maya, were implemented in his name, even many years after his death. The kings that were enthroned in the cities that were conquered also utilized the nobility of “Señor del Oeste”.

Snorkeling: A cheap way to explore the expansive ocean to discover the wonders of Playa del Carmen – Riviera Maya, Mexico

One of the most successful sports in the Riviera Maya is snorkeling, which is a type of diving that is within everybody’s reach and is practiced all along the Mexican Riviera. You only need a diving mask that has a breathing tube attached to try it out. This tube must be open, so you can’t submerge, but it must also have a locking system to enable you to use the capacity of your lungs to submerge and go closer to the bottom. You also should wear flippers in order to feel more comfortable and for better propulsion.

There are hundreds of places where you can snorkel. Experienced snorkelers say that it is better to bring along at least two glasses and a tube with you, because the rental places normally issue used ones. They are washed, but overused. In any sports equipment store you can find good equipment for 12 or 20 Euro/USD. Carrying your flippers is a nuisance, and depending on the place, they can be borrowed or rented. However, if you intend on trying this sport regularly, it is better to bring them along with you; they generally take up a lot of space but some people say that they serve as a good container for carrying things in your suitcase. This information is courtesy of travelers’ inventiveness.

It is one of the most interesting activities of the Riviera Maya, and the bottom of the ocean is the ideal place to observe the flora and fauna of all the sizes and colors. It is an experience that undoubtedly will take you very close to beauty.

Generally, the hotels have lists of places where to snorkel. Additionally, many of the organized trips also include them. However, you can also go out on your own if you know where the good places are by asking around.

The beaches of Playa del Carmen are ideal places for snorkeling, in which the hotel staff and other vacationers will have a good idea of the best snorkel areas; you will be able to discover a great variety of underwater spots. You can also discover other opportunities if you just look around a bit.

The theme parks in the Riviera Maya welcome many visitors and have excellent planned activities. Xcaret (only 3.73 miles from Playa del Carmen or Xel-Ha (some 33.55 miles away) offer these activity, although they are often overcrowded and visitors routinely complain about the muddy waters. The advantage of these parks is that the snorkel equipment that is necessary is included in the price of the tickets, so you only need to leave a deposit to get started.

Some of the most appreciated beaches, as perceived by travelers, for snorkeling are the ones in Akumal, which is located 23 miles from Playa del Carmen and the ones in Tulum, 29 miles away. We can access both cities by public transportation or a private car. Only some 43.50 miles away is a nature reserve called Sian Kaan, wherein you can also snorkel. However, it goes without saying that this activity is more regulated.

Of course, there are other ideal destinations to practice this wonderful water sport, such as Islas Mujeres (48.47 miles) and Cozumel (11.18 miles) via a good ferry connection. There are also coral reefs that can be seen nearby. They are strictly protected areas, however, you can only reach them per organized trips from hotels in Riviera Maya in order to control the number of visitors as a precaution to best protect the reef.

Our recommendation is to respect the environment when you are snorkeling, and to not destroy what you see. Never take anything with you from the ocean. This is an area of high ecological value, in which protecting it means protecting our future and the future of the people who live there.
